Get to Know Cap
Jon Capron served for 18 years as an assistant coach at Baylor University, after completing a career as a middle distance runner at Baylor. He combined with some fast teammates to set 2 school relay records that remain at Baylor. (4x800m, 4x1500m) and was All-Conference in the 1000m in 2001 and 2002.
As an associate head for cross country Capron oversaw both the men’s and women’s teams. In track, his primary duties included the men’s and women’s distance runners, the 400 hurdles and assisting Coach Clyde Hart with the 400m group.
His athletes would go on to win National Junior titles, compete at IAAF World Junior Championships, hold school records (W 400H) Big 12 Conference titles (W 400H, W 600m), NCAA South Central All-Regional Honors, All-Americans and many All-Conference Performances. Several athletes earned Academic All American honors for their work off the course and track (Brockman, Gowell, Niccum, Jackson). Capron’s athletes have always performed well in the classroom with great success in not only graduating athletes but consistently placing student athletes in successful positions as outstanding people. Additionally some athletes go on to compete post-collegiately at various levels in related sports (triathlon, cycling, and running on the track and roads.
Capron, who was born in Honolulu, Hawai’i, was a three-time all-state cross country runner at Eldorado High School in Albuquerque, N.M. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from Baylor in 2003 and his master’s degree in exercise physiology two years later.
He is married to the former Kelly Pace, who is also a Baylor graduate. The couple and their sons Caleb and Luke, and daughter Abby, live in Hewitt, Texas.
